Corelle Profile: Heather's Plate (1995)

A contest was held in 1995 to mark Corelle's 25th anniversary, and details were announced in the February issue of Good Housekeeping.  The Design-A-Corelle-Plate contest asked children aged 7 to 12 to "draw their own concept of diversity and what makes each of us unique and special", using the theme "Imagine What We Can Do Together".

The panel of judges included Marlo Thomas, Phylicia Rashad, Sonia Manzano from Sesame Street, Fred Newman of the Mickey Mouse Club television show, and Anthony Fedd, president of the Society of Black Professionals.  Out of about 6000 entries, the winning design was the work of a 9-year-old girl from Greenville Maine.

Heather explained the concept behind her drawing: "When it's snowing or raining hard, people have to huddle close together under an umbrella so they won't get wet.  I drew them under the umbrella to show different people helping each other.  Diversity means using the gifts God gave you to work together."

In addition to the distinction of her artwork appearing on the commemorative Corelle set, the grand prize package included a three-day trip to New York for Heather and her family, plus $25,000 to be awarded on her 18th birthday.  There were numerous other prizes for best entries from each state, and all prize-winning entries were displayed at the Children's Museum of Manhattan.

Heather's Plate was offered in a single place setting of three pieces, introduced during the autumn of 1995, and discontinued January 1996.  The matching cup borrows its shape from the CornerStone product line, but it is white instead of beige.
