Red 402s: Comparing Multi-Colour Bowls & Friendship
Solid red 402s appear in more than one Pyrex nesting bowl set, and each one is a different shade.
In the 1940s, red 402s had an orange tone (left), best described as tomato red. The more typical deep red colour (right) is from the 1950s & 1960s. The shape of the older bowl also sets it apart; it has a more distinctly contoured foot.
Available from 1968 to 1977, the New Multi-Colour set featured a completely new assortment of colours, including a deep orange 402 (left). Typical red 402 (right) from the usual Multi-Colour set.
When Friendship debuted in 1971, it included an orange-red 402 (left). This shade was often called poppy red, and it is brighter than an orange-red 402 from the 1940s (right).

Friendship 402 (left). Red 401s (right) matching Friendship also exist. They do not belong in the usual boxed set, and were probably sold individually.
With a rust tone, brick red 401s & 403s (right) appeared sometime between 1976 & 1978. They were part of a four-piece set which was completed with an orange 402 and 404. Typical red 402 (left).
