Comparing Transitions with Winter Frost White & Sandstone
Top left is Sandstone, the bowl at bottom left has a Winter Frost White background. On the right is Transitions.
This particular example does appear to fall part-way between Sandstone and White. But there is a wide variance of colour among items sold as Transitions, some seem very white and some are more deeply beige.
Vitrelle exists in these in-between colours because the melter never shuts down for batch changes. Instead, the cold ingredients are added to the top of the molten glass and the new colour eventually works its way through. The dishes continue to be formed as the glass colour transitions from one to another. Those which are neither perfectly white nor dark enough to be Sandstone are excluded from the rest of production and sold at factory outlets.
